How Affiliate Links Work

Some links in our articles are affiliate links. If you click a link and make a purchase, we may receive a commission from the retailer. The price you pay is the same whether you use our link or go directly to the retailer. Commissions are paid by the retailer, not by you.

Editorial Standards

We form our opinions independently and base recommendations on our own research and evaluation criteria — not on affiliate relationships. If we recommend a product, we may use an affiliate link when one is available. If no affiliate link is available, we may still recommend the product.

Affiliate relationships do not influence which products are recommended or how they are evaluated.

We do not accept payment in exchange for positive reviews. We do not publish sponsored content. If we ever receive free products, press samples, or any other compensation related to a product, that will be clearly disclosed on the relevant page.

The Honest Petal Clean Checklist

Every product on this site has been vetted through what I call the Honest Petal Clean Checklist. It’s not a score — it’s a pass/fail checklist. If a product doesn’t clear every item, it doesn’t appear on the site. Period.

A product must meet all of the following:

• No synthetic fragrance. If the ingredient list says “fragrance” or “parfum” without specifying a natural source, it’s out. (Natural fragrance from essential oils is evaluated case by case.)
• No parabens. Methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, ethylparaben — none of them.
• No phthalates. Common endocrine disruptors often hidden under “fragrance.”
• No ingredients banned by the EU. The EU has restricted or banned over 1,600 cosmetic ingredients, while the United States regulates far fewer under federal law. I use the stricter EU standard as a reference point.
• EWG Skin Deep check. I look up every product (or its individual ingredients) on the EWG Skin Deep database. Products with a low hazard rating pass. Products with high hazard flags get a closer look — and usually get cut.

Bonus signals I look for (not required, but noted when present):

• EWG Verified certification
• MADE SAFE certification
• B-Corp certification
• Leaping Bunny (cruelty-free)
• USDA Organic or Certified Vegan

This is an editorial standard based on publicly available ingredient data, published safety research, and personal experience. It is not medical advice and does not guarantee that any product is safe for your individual use. Always patch test new products and consult a dermatologist if you have specific skin concerns.
